COMMUNITY: Music at Kol Hadash
Bon Singer
We are very fortunate to have Bon Singer join Kol Hadash as Cantorial Soloist. She brings many years of experience in performance and in encouraging others to sing. Her enthusiasm for Jewish liturgy, her lovely voice and great sense of humor carries us along to sounding better all the time. Bon Singer serves as artistic director for Ya Elah, a Bay Area vocal ensemble.
She is perhaps best known for her work with the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble, Kitka. She served as Artistic Director, composer, arranger, and a singer for 14 years, and is recognized as one of the foremost directors of Bulgarian choral music in America.
Bon's musical experience ranges from performance and extensive research in remote eastern European villages to performing with Olympia Dukakis in ACT's production of Hecuba. She has taught workshops in eastern European music for symphony choruses and folk ensembles, and has led chant workshops at National Jewish Meditation conferences, as well as for the local community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Klezhumanists
The Klezhumanists is Kol Hadash's "house" band, lead by "Hornman" Bill Nemoyten. The "Klezhumanists" were formed about three years ago by Bill Nemoyten, the leader, who is a professional musician and retired music teacher. He plays trombone and trumpet in the group. The keyboard player is Lloyd Goldwasser. Claudio Bluer plays guitar and Fred Rosenthal, Lulu Karp and Adam Berson are the violinists. David Berson on sax and Nina Vogel on oboe are the woodwind players. The late Dr. Phil Klein played clarinet and sax with the group when it first started and also arranged some of the music. Bill's grandson Aaron Nemoyten has joined the band as a drummer on several occasions and Claudio's son Ariel Bluer has performed on bass guitar. The group has performed at many Shabbat celebrations, performing both Shabbat and klezmer music. One of their most notable performances was at the San Francisco J.C.C. when they entertained at a meeting of the International Society for Humanistic Judaism. New members are always welcome to join the Klezhumanists. Contact Bill Nemoyten if interested.
Michael Potter
At Yom Kippur, Kol Hadash is fortunate to have had member Michael Potter play the Kol Nidre on his cello for the past number of years. Michael is a physician in San Francisco, and a second generation Kol Hadash member; he and spouse Yeva Johnson have produced a third generation with their two beautiful children.
